In school, and sometimes even at work, we are asked to read a book; that way, we would learn something. At times, we may even take our own initiative to read a book. For some, they read in order to pass time whereas others read books that serve as guides for them whenever they are in the process of learning something.

For instance, those trying to learn how to play an instrument or those trying to learn a sport spend time behind the pages of a book in order to advance their learning. Unfortunately, some people find it hard to retain what they’ve actually read. Because of this, they end up not learning that much even after hours spent on several pages.

This situation can really be frustrating and so, we’ve decided to look into the ways on how to make reading effective. Although these tips may not work for everyone; surely, it will work for some.

Ways To Retain

Take down notes as you read

Taking down notes is a very important aspect of reading. Here, the important parts of the book are highlighted so that it would be much easier for you to go through it for a review. Note that there are different ways of taking down notes and what may work for others may not work for you.

Some people take down notes by drawing flow charts, symbolisms, etc. whereas others take down notes by merely writing the important words they have to remember.

Apply what you read  in real life

Especially when it comes to books that teach some skills or sports, it is very important for you to apply them in real. This helps you determine what the book is trying to teach. After all, reading a book in order to learn a sport would be useless if you do not actually translate what you have learned into actions.

For instance, if you’re reading a book on how to skate then you will really have to secure a pair of skates, such as those from Skates HQ, in order for you to actually be able to apply what the book is instructing you to do.

Similarly, if you’re reading a book on the things you need to do after undergoing a divorce, you must see to it that you are able to apply what you’ve read in your every day life in order for you to actually move forward.

Read the book more than once

It is never really enough to read a book just once; this is not enough for the contents of the book to actually register in your mind. Perhaps, there may be people who are gifted in such a way that reading a book once is more than enough for them to remember what the book says. However, most people will never find this enough.

Associate with real experiences

The best way to retain information you read from a book is by making them personal. In a way, you must associate personal experiences or even memories with whatever you are reading. This way, it is easier for your mind to retrieve the information. Psychology says that when information is associated with certain memories or emotions, the brain finds it easier to remember these information.
